“Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing”

Yep, that’s the rather striking name of this peculiar cocktail from The Independent in Boston. What made it catch our interest was mainly that huge amount of Angostura bitters in it, a full half of an ounce! It sounded overwhelming…

However, before actually making this cocktail we decided to try some Angostura bitters neat. Our preconception was that it would be extremely bitter, so we were actually a bit surprised to discover how smooth, and gingerbready Angostura is. Sure, it’s not sweet, but there is a pleasant earthy deepness to it and you can pick up both fruity and spicy notes in the background. So without further ado we carried on shaking up the cocktail.

Quite striking is the colour this cocktail gets thanks to the Angostura bitters. As it is combined with orgeat the creation ends up with a silky texture, completely brown/orange in a rather unique way. It tasted really good, and we think this drink would work well as a conversation piece at any cocktail party.

But, despite all that Angostura bitters in the cocktail, we just couldn’t resist finishing off the whole creation with a few extra drops of Angostura, as captured in this photograph.
