Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails

One of our cocktail books taken out most often isĀ Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails by Ted Haigh. This book is a treasure cove for fans of the American 1920’s cocktail era. Most recipes in the book are very valid also today, and ingredients are surprisingly available. There is a lot of background information on each cocktail presented in the book. Pictures are extra interesting, as they often show vintage bottles of the particular ingredients.

The book is available at Amazon.

The Scofflaw

So we decided to try a rye-based cocktail from the book. “The Scofflaw” is a shaken cocktail with the following ingredients:

1,5 oz rye

1 oz dry vermouth

0,75 oz fresh lemon juice

0,75 oz real pomegranate grenadine

The taste is obviously a bit sweet thanks to the grenadine, but also rich and deep due to the rye. Color-wise the drink gets a red and brown tone, it looks really pleasant.

We used a high quality rye from Bulleit, and it worked perfectly in this cocktail!
